Named after the whitewater river it borders, Potomac MD, is one of the most affluent zip codes in the entire United States according to the US Census. Located only about 15 miles NW of Washington DC in the state of Maryland, it is decidedly one of DC’s richest and most beautiful suburbs and remains an ever popular destination for those looking to buy land or a new home in the Washington DC suburbs.

With a population of over 44,000, Potomac is actually an 26 square mile unincorporated area in Montgomery County - not a city. Originally developed as a summer escape for Washington elite, it is now a vibrant year round community.A main road in the area,River Road, was actually the Tehogee Indian Trail, built by the Canaze Indian nation in 1716.

Potomac, is a white-collar town with 97.2% of the workforce employed as professionals, managers, and office workers. Because of the close proximity to DC, many living in Potomac work in DC for the Senate, Congress and other various government agencies. In 2008, Potomac placed 7th on CNNMoney.com’s list of “top earning American Towns," with its median household income of $183,258.

Interestingly, Potomac also has more people living here that are employed in math and computers than 95% of the country. Education is a top priority here, with over half the county budget going to public education. The money is well spent, as Potomac was also ranked seventh by Forbes as one of the “top educated American small towns” in 2008.

 

Government workers, horse lovers, retirees, white collar workers, professional athletes, CEOs, and members of the media are just some of the residents who call Potomac home. It is also classified as an “artist town” with a high percentage of artists, designers and people working in the media living here.

Because of the large lots and the abundance of rolling hills, many of those owning real estate in the area are horse owners and lovers. Horse lovers have been flocking to the Potomac since the late 1920’s when Washington’s fox hunters found the area. Since the 1940's, the area has hosted the Potomac Hunt, a steeplechase race run for charity. Indeed, this suburb has deep-rooted ties to the many equestrian-related organizations in the area. You’ll find equestrian-related activities throughout the area and in parks such as Great Falls Park.
